Khao Sok River by Raft

Bamboo river rafts are one of the oldest forms of transport in Thailand and in the Khao Sok region they were once a popular way to carry goods from the Andaman Sea on Thailand’s west coast to the Gulf of Thailand in the east – the narrowest part of Thailand, known as the Isthmus of Kra. Many old artifacts have been found along these ancient trading routes, and in Khao Sok National Park the rivers were once an important part of this east-west passage.

On our Khao Sok River by Raft adventure, you will get to step back in time and experience what it was like to travel by bamboo raft along a slow-meandering river, deep in the jungle. Each of our rafts can support two people, accompanied by a local fisherman, who punts, or pushes the raft along the river using a long pole. We use only experienced fishermen who have lived along the river all their lives and know the currents well. The rafts are very stable and seating is surprisingly comfortable, so sit back, relax and enjoy the view on this one-hour journey down an ancient trading route.

Halfway through our adventure you will disembark from the raft for a short hike through the jungle and a rubber tree plantation to visit a small cave, where your guide will show you how to boil water in bamboo on an open fire. You will then enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or coffee, sweetened by the bamboo and wood smoke, before continuing on your way. As the journey comes to an end, there’s even a chance to try your hand at punting the raft yourself – a skill that’s not as easy as it looks!

After disembarking, it’s only a short 10-minute drive back to Anurak Community Lodge.
